"HVAC Design Considerations for Indoor Plant Cultivation Facilities"

Dr. Nadia Sabeh is President and Founder of Dr. Greenhouse, Inc., an agricultural and mechanical engineering firm that specializes in the design of HVAC systems for indoor plant environments. Dr. Sabeh was inspired by controlled environment agriculture 20 years ago as an undergrad, when she interned on a small shiitake and oyster mushroom farm in southern Idaho. Since then, she has dedicated her education and career to helping farmers grow crops indoors, successfully and profitably. Dr. Sabeh is the author of the book Tomato Greenhouse Roadmap and contributed two chapters to the book Plant Factory. She is regularly invited for speaking engagements and has been featured in and written articles for several magazines, including Marijuana Venture, for which she also serves on the board of technical advisors. Dr. Sabeh is also the Co-Chair of a new ASABE/ASHRAE co-sponsored committee charged with developing the standard “HVAC for Indoor Plant Environments without Sunlight.”

Topic Description

Dr. Sabeh will review different types of indoor plant cultivation facilities, including warehouse, greenhouse, and container farms and discuss the unique challenges for HVAC design of these facilities, including humidity control, odor control, energy and water use, and building codes and regulations. She will also update the group on the early developments of an HVAC standard to be co-developed by ASHRAE and ASABE (American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers).
